Cruising in North Kolkata

Growing up as a North Kolkata boy
Life, to be honest, is not a matter of joy (haha, what did you think ? mostly joy ?)
Regardless of the family you are born in
You look out of the window
and you discern a strange feeling of anxiety and aversion
slowly creep in

Waking up at a certain AM
You are greeted not by peace and tranquility
But, by the chants and bells of ongoing pujas
performed by women,
which sets quite a good example
of one's allegiance and divinity

They ask god for this and that
But the question I ask is
What is the need for so many cravings
when the ambition to go forward in life
is the chief virtue, they lack.

Out in the roads, I walk
and the faces I see
although they show a sense
of being happy and free
but, also give a sign of contentment
and a weakened but permanent establishment

Every second soul I meet
Commences the conversation with a very well know phrase
আর কি বোলবো
If a talk starts with a sigh!
then how can the multitude
ever think and conceive of something high ?

It is said that hard work and passion
is the key to success
But, with an atmosphere as this
The mainframe of words which come to your mind
are.....well, every negative colloquy except success.

Its the place where I am born
And its an ironical fact,
that it is me only
who is referring to this dwelling
as hopeless and torn

What I always believe in
Is that one day
when the people arise to believe
their own potential and then
I can at least hope
that it can be a better place to live after all.
